Millennium Prize Problems

The Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) is a privately funded operating foundation dedicated to increasing and disseminating mathematical knowledge. The CMI supports the work of leading researchers at various stages of their careers and organizes conferences, workshops, and an annual summer school. Contemporary breakthroughs are recognized by its annual Research Award.
In order to celebrate mathematics in the new millennium, the Clay Mathematics Institute of Cambridge, Massachusetts (CMI) established seven Prize Problems:

Following the decision of the Scientific Advisory Board, the Board of Directors of CMI designated a $7 million prize fund for the solutions
to these problems, with $1 million allocated to the solution of each problem

Rules for the Millennium Prizes (abridgement)

  • A proposed solution to one of the Millennium Prize Problems may not be submitted directly to the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI)
    for consideration.
  • Before consideration, a proposed solution must be published in a refereed mathematics publication of worldwide reputation.
  • It must also have general acceptance in the mathematics community 2 years after. Following this two-year waiting period
the Scientific Advisory Board of CMI (SAB) will decide whether a solution merits detailed consideration.
  • In the affirmative case, the SAB will constitute a special advisory committee will report within a reasonable time to the SAB.
Based on this report and possible further investigation, the SAB will make a recommendation to the Directors.
  • If the SAB cannot come to a clear decision about the correctness of a solution to a problem, its attribution, or the appropriateness
of an award, the SAB may recommend that no prize be awarded for a particular problem.
  • All decision-making procedures concerning the CMI Millennium Prize Problems are private. No records of these deliberations
or related correspondence may be made public unless 50 years time have elapsed after the event in question

9th European Congress of Chemical Engineering

Dear Colleagues,

The Netherlands, will host the 9th European Congress of Chemical Engineering (ECCE9) and the 2nd European Congress of Applied Biotechnology (ECAB2) from 1-24 April 2013 in The Hague.

It will be the most comprehensive Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Congress in the history of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE), with a theme that encompasses every corner of today’s society:

Shaping a Sustainable Future:
a Partnership of Academia, Industry and Society

The Call for Abstracts is already open, with a deadline of 15 November 2012. The Scientific Committee welcomes submissions from individuals and industrial partners.

We expect around 2300 people  including 700 talented students. The programme will comprise contributions from
both industry and academia, via lectures, workshops, excursions, a job market, and a large high-tech industrial innovation exhibition.

And as a further special event, we are pleased to mark the 60th Jubilee of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering (EFCE).

50th Jubilee of Chemical Engineering and Equipment Journal

This year the journal celebrates 50th anniversary, when the first issue of quarterly published Chemical Apparatus appeared. Since 1970 the journal publication was continued as Chemical Engineering and Equipment. Subsequent teams and co-operators
tried to accomplish ambitious aims of the first Editors. These aims were then developed to fulfill expectations of research workers, designers, construction engineers and also managers and process-line engineers, especially in chemical, petrochemical, food-agricultural industries and also in energy production, municipal system maintenance and environmental protection.

Editors express sincere gratitude to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education for financial support enabling the journal publication,
and the SIMPRESS Printing House, Editorial Board, Reviewers, Authors, Readers, the AKAPIT Firm (typesetting and formatting) and the SITPChem Printing Establishment in Gliwice for fruitful, many years lasting co-operation. We would like to articulate special thanks
to Professor Karol Machej, Editor-in-chief of many years for his outstanding achievements in organizational and factual fields.

The session opening was performed by Andrzej Ciszewski – SIMP President, who chaired the meeting, accompanied by: Jan Kaczmarek – honorary President of SIMP, Aleksander Kopeć – President of SIMP board and Kazimierz Łasiewicki – SIMP secretary general. Followed by the introduction of party colour (formed by pupils of Europejskie Technikum Lotnicze SIMP) and welcoming of participants, the President of SIMP proposed o commemorate with silence five honorary members of SIMP who died since the last General SIMP Convention of Representatives, i.e.: Jerzy Koźbiał (SIMP branch in Kalisz), Marian Potorski (SIMP branch in Toruń), Lucjan Przybylski (SIMP branch in Kraków), Kazimierz Stępniewski (SIMP branch in Łódź) and Tadeusz Żuk (SIMP branch in Płock).
The session schedule comprised three talks:
